Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favourite American authors and The Lacuna is her most prolific work. There is only one word to truly describe it: epic. We follow our protagonist Harrison Shepherd in a life split between two nations (the US and Mexico) each finding their position and identity in a modern world. Simultaneously we find Shepherd keeping the company of Diego Rivera, Frieda Kahlo and Trotsky. A book of art as revolution and beauty as an act of dissidence. Stunning in every way. It may be over 600 pages but I sped through it in a matter of days.
