Surprisingly, a book I was forced to read at A-Level and didn't hate - an anomaly, maybe, but that doesn't take away from the bleak, ferocious brilliance of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. A quick read and, in McCarthy's signature style, with no chapter breaks it is a whirlwind of a story. We follow a father and son through the barren hostile environment of a post apocalyptic world. This book is a devastating exploration of loneliness, hostility and abandonment - what do we hold on to when all hope is gone? What do we do? Just keep walking.
