A rags to riches novel set in London in the 1920s following the life of a maid with big dreams of being a West End star. The characters are so authentic and the historical detail is so vivid you feel like you're there with Dolly in the midst of post-war London. It really brings home the often harsh reality of life after the war for those who made it home to find themselves and their loved ones changed beyond recognition from who they were before. This book is uplifting and heartbreaking in equal measure and I absorbed every single word until the very last page.
