I want to be constructive in this review but I feel like publishers are trying to replicate Sally Rooney and not really succeeding. This is another one of those novels where nothing really happens and it's not enjoyable.
Katie, Maeve and Evelyn are a group of friends. We experience this novel from Katie's perspective where Evelyn is the ringleader and Maeve is a bit unpredictable. There is the usual girl gang angst, relationship drama, competition amongst friends and the backdrop of village life vs the draw of Dublin but I didnt buy into any of the characters or any of their triumph and tribulations.
I can't put my finger on why but I just couldn't get on board and engaged. It may be that the subject matter doesn't hold the interest it once did or just that itโs been overdone - the characters just didn't feel genuine to me.
