‘Imagine that, Feyi. We’re alive and I love you’.

Akwaeke has done an incredible job exploring the themes of grief, guilt and growth. I was initially unsure about the book, surrounding such a sensitive topic, and being through something similar myself I was cautious as to how intense it might be. Akwaeke managed to keep the book exciting and colloquial whilst also having parts that were more heartfelt. The story begins in Brooklyn and focuses on two best friends, Feyi and Joy and finding purpose in the city of New York. After a failed romantic encounter, We travel with Feyi to an unknown location in the Caribbean which is described as a (unknown) paradise, where she connects with her new, older lover.

The book contained many twists and turns; which led me to finishing the book In just a few sittings!

Feyi’s romantic relationships were definitely complex. However there was a beauty in seeing Feyi gain the confidence to find new love and bond over grief with someone who has been through similar to her, who understands her traumas on a different level. Feyi taught me that though things can be complex, life is short and we should live in love ❤️
