The Vegetarian by Han Kang is one of the most emotionally difficult books I have ever read. Please don’t let that put you off however; it is as poetic as it is devastating and as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. Kang’s triptych of snapshots show us a period of time through the eyes of three members of one family: husband, brother in law, and sister all revolving around one person’s choice to become vegetarian. The thing that struck me most about this book is the phenomenal translation by Deborah Smith – the brutality of the language fits perfectly with the uncompromising world Kang paints for us. Not easy but certainly worth a read.
