The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer is a slow-burning power house of a book and one I could not put down. Filer, through his work as a mental health researcher at the University of Bristol, offers a great insight in to the workings of a schizophrenic mind and deals with the subject with astonishing sensitivity and sympathy. A vividly painted exploration into the mind of a young man with severe mental health problems and the dire state of mental health services in the UK, Filer's novel is eye-opening and heartbreaking in equal measure. Deserving of it's 2013 Costa Book of the Year Award and a book I would definitely recommend.
