Alaa Al Aswany through his novel takes the reader on a whirlwind of emotions and anticipation in this page-turner. A translation of this quality allows a non-Arabic speaker to live through Cairo in the 1940’s. A lens into the lives of the elite and the non at the turn of an era in Egypt. Set around the iconic Automobile Club of Egypt, the characters Aswany brings to life takes the reader through a journey of the complexities of an occupied Egypt, humanities desire for dignity and respect and the tension with the desperate need to provide with so little. There are definitely innuendos and jokes that will make so much more sense in the original Arabic text but Aswany has yet again written a novel that truly draws you in.
