Oh man! Mr. Roberts transported me through a whirlwind of emotions with Shantaram which has since become my perennial favourite. The journey follows an escaped felon from Australia, behest with a false NZ passport, who escapes to India where he gets mixed up with the Mumbai mafia. He then becomes a slum doctor and finds love…until the authorities find him of course. At which point the story, which was already gripping enough, gets a whole load more thrilling. I then discovered that Shantaram is actually a real account of Roberts’ adulthood. Absolutely life-changing. And for that reason I probably won’t read the sequel for fear of knocking the lasting effect that Shantaram has left on me
