Normal People & Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

So I thought I’d do a double review of both Normal People and Conversations with Friends and finally put this debate to an end lol or maybe it’ll go on forever but who knows!? 🤷🏽‍♀️⁣

So I read both recently. I finished Normal People two weeks ago and CWF yesterday and I have to say it was Normal People for me. ⁣

This book will forever hold a special place in my heart and I love Connell. He is *that* fictional character that I have fallen in love with as has every other girl I’m sure. ⁣
But Conversation with Friends was...weird. ⁣

It wasn’t an awful book. I like Rooney’s writing style, it was actually quite an easy read and I got through it quite quickly considering and couldn’t wait to finish it but that’s it - it’s not memorable for me. I just found them all so annoying, Bobbi, Frances and Melissa. I think Nick was probably my favourite but even then I found his relationship with his wife and Frances so bizarre. I just didn’t get it. ⁣

They all pissed me off in their own way. I found Bobbi and Frances to be really crappy friends to one another. I don’t know how Nick allowed Frances, a 21 year old, to treat him the way she did. It was odd that Melissa was “okay” with it all...ah I don’t know. When I think of this book, the 90 day fiancé Rosa “meh” meme comes to mind lol. Harsh I know, I’m sorry I love you Sally!! ⁣

However, Normal People...ah Normal People! I think I might read it again. ⁣

The girls all read this last year, and kept telling me I’d enjoy it but I’m glad I read it when I did. It really did just lift my mood especially in these times. I could talk about this book forever. I’ve become obsessed. I found both protagonists to be real and somewhat relatable. Neither was perfect. The only thing I hoped for was a happy hopeful ending. You’re left to make up your own mind but I just needed that closure.

Soy Tanya. I’m the youngest of the group...and I don’t really know what to say except that I find these things really awkward. When Linda first came to me with this idea of an online bookclub/review page I was 100% down, although I was a little worried and felt like backing out on many occasions as I felt like my reviews were awful - I’m not good with words at all. If anyone was to ask me a year ago how I found a book, I’d reply: “good” - that’s my review done. But being part of this club with such amazing girls has really made me a lot more confident and comfortable. So I’ll forever be grateful. It’s always a laugh when we’re together, we are guaranteed to get side-tracked but our meetings are always productive and a lot of fun. This is just the beginning for us. I like reading all kinds of books from different genres but prefer romance/YA. With work being full on I like feel-good books that are light and easy. I’m currently in the middle of reading a few books lol but sticking to The Zanzibar Wife by Rebecca Rodriquez. Reading for me is a form of escapism, just getting away from the stress of real life and getting lost in book and falling in love with characters. I can’t list my top 5 or even top 10 so here are a few of my all-time favourites: The Sicilian by Mario Puzo To all the boys I’ve loved before by Jenny Han, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hoseeini, The Forty Rules of Love by Shafa Kelif Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith and Moonlight Over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan.
