@barackobama agrees with us too so I’m sure #Bookstagram was well aware of the Sally Rooney hype that was everywhere a few years back, and after reading Conversations with Friends, I didn’t buy into it at all…until I read Normal people.
I fell in love with this book! I was rooting for both the two main characters - I could empathise with their flaws and found myself justifying their actions by the end of it when discussing it with my sister.
Marianne comes from a wealthy family but is a social outcast at school. Connell, working-class and raised by a single mum, is popular and well-liked. Both are awkward but intelligent and begin a secret relationship that breaks down due to social expectations.
They meet again at university where the majority of the story is set and the roles are reversed. Marianne is popular and due to class snobbery, Connell is finding it hard to adjust. The heart of this book is a love story but a slightly depressing one.
The book was aptly named because Marianne and Connell both seemed so normal and real! Neither were perfect but that’s what made them even more endearing.
The ending is ambiguous so it allows you to draw your own conclusion (I opted for the optimistic ending!) and Sally Rooney’s writing is dynamic and beautiful! Highly recommend!
