I've had my eye on Middlesex for some time and it didn't disappoint - but don't expect anything about the historic English county. This is a sprawling, funny, touching account of three generations of the Stephanides family, narrated by Calliope, who is intersex. As well as being a human story, it also illuminates some fascinating points in 20th-century history, all woven expertly into the narrative. A book to savour and languish in, it's beautifully written and an absolute joy.
