Fake Skating

Fake Skating by Lynn Painter

Review From @ostomateforlife:
Fake Skating by Lynn Painter

I saw this book on offer and as I’ve previously enjoyed Painter’s work, I thought I was onto a winner right? Wrong! This book was longer than it should have been and I’m not sure I liked anything about this book tbh!

Dani visits her grandparents in Minnesota every summer where she spends her time with her childhood best friend Alec. That’s until she moves to Germany for her Dad’s job and the visits stop.

After her parents divorce, she moves back to Minnesota with her Grandad with her mum. She’s used to being an army kid and always moving schools but this time she has the comfort of Alec, her sweet and nerdy best friend.

Except he’s not the boy she remembers. He’s now the school’s hockey god and is known as Zeus and he’s avoiding her.

My issue with this book firstly that the trope is fake dating. The reasons for them fake dating are so paper-thin that nothing else really holds up.
The misunderstanding about why they stopped writing postcards to each other, is resolved conveniently right at the end.

Then there’s the issue of Benji, Zeus’ arch nemesis and Dani’s next door neighbour. It’s never explained why Dani took him to hers and Alec’s ā€˜spot’ when she should have visited him when his dad was in hospital.

The dual perspective that Painter does in all her books felt jarring this time. All Alec thinks is ā€œholy fuck Daniā€ this, ā€œholy fuck Daniā€ that.
This read honestly felt so forced.

I don’t understand how this won a Goodreads choice award. Please pass. I wish I did.

Soy Tanya. I’m the youngest of the group...and I don’t really know what to say except that I find these things really awkward. When Linda first came to me with this idea of an online bookclub/review page I was 100% down, although I was a little worried and felt like backing out on many occasions as I felt like my reviews were awful - I’m not good with words at all. If anyone was to ask me a year ago how I found a book, I’d reply: ā€œgoodā€ - that’s my review done. But being part of this club with such amazing girls has really made me a lot more confident and comfortable. So I’ll forever be grateful. It’s always a laugh when we’re together, we are guaranteed to get side-tracked but our meetings are always productive and a lot of fun. This is just the beginning for us. I like reading all kinds of books from different genres but prefer romance/YA. With work being full on I like feel-good books that are light and easy. I’m currently in the middle of reading a few books lol but sticking to The Zanzibar Wife by Rebecca Rodriquez. Reading for me is a form of escapism, just getting away from the stress of real life and getting lost in book and falling in love with characters. I can’t list my top 5 or even top 10 so here are a few of my all-time favourites: The Sicilian by Mario Puzo To all the boys I’ve loved before by Jenny Han, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hoseeini, The Forty Rules of Love by Shafa Kelif Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith and Moonlight Over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan.
