Here to keep you up to date with the goings on in the book world without doing any of the legwork.
We want this to be a cosy community so we’re always looking for book recommendations, guest reviewers, and just general chat! Although we love books, we’re partial to a good TV series or film recommendation too!

Forward Forward

Welcome to April!

Spring is finally here! I hope you’re all as excited as we are for longer days, the promise of more sunshine and some time off over this Easter weekend.

March was definitely the month of book prize longlist announcements! From the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the International Booker Prize, the Dylan Thomas Prize, the Rathbone Folio Prize to the Jhalak Prize, we are looking forward to seeing which books make the respective shortlists and if this will result in more books being added to our ever growing TBRs!

However, it has to be said that some of these longlists have left a lot to be desired and as time has gone on, we’ve found ourselves paying less and less attention to prize winning books and making our choices based on book recommendations from each other or other trusted bookworms!

What are your thoughts on book prizes? And how do you decide on which book to pick up next? Reply and let us know! Or enter our giveaway below!

TV & Film Musings

  • For Anime fans, the final episode of Attack on Titan (Season 4) aired last week with the return set to be December. It’s definitely one of the best shows around (if you’re into it) and definitely worth a watch for any Game of Thrones aficionados
  • Marvel fans should already know that Falcon and the Winter Soldier is available to watch on Disney+. This should definitely fill the gap left by WandaVision which was brilliant!
  • Succession is a brilliant two-season show on Sky about the inner workings of The Roy family who control one of the biggest media and entertainment companies in the world. The story is full of corruption and backstabbing and the hunger for power. Fantastic viewing!
  • For anyone who was a fan of The Bold Type on Amazon Prime, Season 4 is now on Netflix UK! Based on the life of the editor of Cosmopolitan, it's all about friendships between women set around the magazine Scarlet

Ramadan Reads

Monday 12th April (God-willing) will mark the beginning of Ramadan. The Holy month of Ramadan is one of the most important months for Muslims where fasting takes place from dawn to dusk and yes, that means not even water! (Exceptions are made for those who are ill, elderly or pregnant).

Fasting is one of the five Pillars of Islam and as well as physical detox, it teaches self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thereby encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (which is another Pillar of Islam). Alongside abstaining from food and water, it is also encouraged to give up bad habits and vices. It truly is the time for a reset!

As 40% of TCBC are Muslim, we’re really looking forward to reconnecting with our faith, building on our spiritual connection and just getting a renewed perspective on life! The addition of a reduction of cravings and weight loss is always an added bonus!

Below are some spiritual books that we recommend during this time. Do also look out for further Ramadan reading recommendations on our Instagram page!

Provisions for the Seekers: A Manual of Prophetic Hadiths by Shaykh Abdur Rahman Ibn Yusuf

A truly wonderful uplifting read full of gems based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Described as a selection of beautiful and practical pieces of advice from the Quran, the Prophet (PBUH) and scholars on repentance, guidance and purification. Designed to serve as a source of hope and strength for those going through difficult times.

Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by Martin Ling

Highly recommended biography of the Prophet Muhammad by the acclaimed English scholar and philosopher, Martin Lings. Often cited as a succinct detail about the life of the Prophet (PBUH) and the beginning of Islam.

Events

Last month we were fortunate enough to host the wonderful Nikesh Shukla as we discussed his beautiful debut memoir Brown Baby. It was such an enlightening, joyous and heartfelt evening and we absolutely loved sharing and listening to everyone's thoughts. A massive thank you to Nikesh for joining us and being so open and honest with us.

This month we are spoiling you with another Candid Conversations event with Kate Elizabeth Russell. Exploring the psychological dynamics of the harrowing relationship between the vulnerable and naïve teenage Vanessa and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, Mr. Strane, the brilliant and challenging My Dark Vanessa is an addictive read that marks the explosive debut of a fantastic new writer.

There's still plenty of time to join so make sure you sign up for what’ll be a fantastic evening!

April Book Releases

The Khan by Saima Mir
For fans of crime fiction and The Godfather, this is for you! Mir expertly creates a compelling story of a Pakistani criminal underworld network set in Bradford. But with a woman running this organised crime group, this is unlike anything you've ever read.
Girl in the Walls by A.J. Gnuse
She doesn't exist. She can't exist. Girl in the Walls is a story of overcoming grief, of unconventional friendships and learning that we shouldn't always fear what we don't understand. It is about understanding the difference between a house and a home and what it means to lose both. Reviewed here >>>
This One Sky Day by Leone Ross
Set on the magical island of Popisho, this novel is the story of star-crossed lovers who we follow over a bewitching 24 hour period. Leone Ross is a master of her craft and if you're in the mood to be transported far away then this is for you!
One of Them by Musa Okwonga
Okwonga writes an open and honest memoir about his experiences studying at Eton in the 1990s. One of Them is his incisive and cogently argued account of his bittersweet relationship with an institution that did him much good yet seems to have a negative effect on large parts of society. A must-read!
That's all for April folks! For those of you fasting, we hope you have the most blessed month and make the most of it.
We'll be back in your inboxes next month!

Miriam Hanna

Aka Mimi. I have known Linda for a very, very long time. We grew up together and you learn very quickly that when she gets an idea in her head, you would be an idiot not to back her to see it through. When the idea of the book club came up it was another lightbulb moment where I knew this wasn't only going to be a success but really fun.

I have always been a bookworm. Remember when you were little and you went shopping with your mum or dad and they gave you a toy or something to occupy yourself with whilst you were in the trolley? I used to get books to keep me quiet. They were and are my ultimate form of escapism and more and more they are about understanding who I am as a person. Books make me cry more than films and TV Shows. I can get lost for hours. I love historic fiction, political thrillers and gritty crime novels but also biographies and memoirs of people I find interesting like sportspeople. I was fortunate to be in the Harry Potter generation and if weren't for those books I don't know what I would have. Young literature was so poor at the point. To have a book that had me and my family queuing up at midnight to buy was seriously special.

Whether you listen to audio books, read off a kindle or stick to carrying around good old fashioned hard copies (that's me!) I truly believe reading is the best way to spend some time every day.

The books I would have with me on a desert island? 📚🏝Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Akzaban, Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters, The Power by Naomi Alderman, Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
