Join The Candid Book Club at Waterstones Piccadilly for an evening with Marcia Hutchinson to discuss her debut novel, The Mercy Step.

A powerful, heart-wrenching story of family, faith and the search for freedom, Hutchinson’s tender and piercingly observant debut maps the coming-of-age and quiet rebellion of a Black girl in 1960s Britain.

Marcia Hutchinson is the author of The Mercy Step, her solo literary debut. She also co-authored with Kate Griffin under the pen name 'Lila Cain', the historical fiction novel The Blackbirds of St Giles. The sequel of which is coming out in January 2027. She attened Oxford university and worked as a lawyer, before founding educational publishing company Primary Colours, which she ran until 2014. She was awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to Cultural Diversity.

We encourage attendees to read the book beforehand to allow for an open discussion on the night, but copies of the book will also be available to purchase online via the Book & Ticket bundle – to be collected at the event.
